How to change the NTP (time server) used with Windows Server 2008 or 2012

Estimated Reading Time: 1 Minutes

To configure a Windows Server to sync with an outside / public time server:

1) Open a command prompt as administrator

2) Type in this command: w32tm /config /manualpeerlist:"0.pool.ntp.org 1.pool.ntp.org" /syncfromflags:MANUAL

3) Stop and restart the "Windows Time" service.  This can be done from Services.msc or the command line with:

  • net stop "windows time"
  • net start "windows time"

NOTE: it will take a minute for the server to go and resync and update the clock.  To check status, look in Event Viewer under the System section.

To display the current configuration, run this command: w32tm /query /configuration.  Then look under the section [TimeProviders] and make sure the new servers are listed.
